FAQS

  1. How many 5th grade classes will be at DM next year?
As of now, we anticipate 3 classrooms. Just like 3rd and 4th, the classes will be departmentalized. Two teachers will have Reading and Social Studies, and the other teachers will have Math and Science.

  2. Where are you putting these classrooms?
This is definitely a question I have been asking since day one. We will be adding portables. More than likely just 1, but possibly 2 portables. Please know that I will NOT be putting any homeroom classes in portables. We are still working on locations and changes for next year so stay tuned!

  3. Who are you going to hire for the 5th grade?
I have spoken with a few teachers who are still considering the move up to 5th grade, but it's too early to share who is teaching what grade next year. It begins to look like a chess board as I move one teacher, I need to move another to cover positions. I will not be announcing the 2022-2023 staff until late spring, once my budget is approved. We do anticipate adding additional staff members, outside of DM. I also have the choice of who fills these positions. Teachers will not be displaced from other schools.

  4. How do I know if my child qualifies for 5th grade?
This is an easy one to answer! If your child is currently enrolled as a student at DM, then they are already qualified to move into those 5th grade spots.

  5. What about school choice?
Dan Mills Elementary School is no longer a school choice option. Again, if your child is already attending DM by school choice in grades K-4, then they're on a path to complete their elementary school experience is locked in with us.

  6. What about applying to magnet schools?
Magnet schools will still be 5th-8th next year. If you plan to apply for schools like Meigs, Head, etc. you will still want to apply for a seat at these schools for the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. Seats will be available for the students in 6th grade, but will be very limited. This means if you want for your child to attend magnet schools, I would advise applying for 5th grade to improve your child's chances to being admitted.

  7. How does my family tour magnet schools we are interested in knowing more about?

Information about connecting with MNPS schools to schedule a tour can be found here.
